VO in the Time of COVID-19

When I rolled into Honeymix on March 6th to record a spot for Spectrum Mobile, I had no idea that it would be my last in-studio session for the foreseeable future. As the world shut down seemingly overnight and jobs that could became remote, an industry that was already partially remote became entirely so. Engineers moved their equipment home, and voice actors rushed to convert their closets into vocal booths.

I had already been working out of a home studio for awhile, but I knew it needed upgrading in anticipation of all agent bookings being recorded from home as well. I spent my first week in quarantine doing just that - I gifted myself the mic I fell in love with every time I used it in a pro studio (hello Sennheiser 416!), consulted an engineer on the audio I was producing and replaced some acoustic paneling to improve it, and invested in SourceConnect so studios could record directly from my mic remotely.

To date, I’ve been able to record commercials for WW, Inspira Health, and California Clean Energy - all clients that I had previously recorded for in pro studios.

I miss auditioning and working in professional studios more than anything, but I’ve never been more grateful to be able to work from home.
